The Roots Beneath 1, 2017, Unique Edition, 28"x6".
I have, liked many people today, been uprooted at the age of 20 and then moved around all my life. As it can be fascinating to live and discover different cultures, making new friends; it is also very hard. Leaving people behind, loved ones is very challenging and one experiences a sense of grief each time. Trying to forget the old life to fit better the new one is emotionally tough.
I am facing a time in my life when it is important to go back to my roots and my work is showing it.
I believe that one step to grow roots is the home which is also called “Le Foyer” in French. It is the place where we get warm when cold and supported when needed by the family. It is a place of familiar exchanges and love. I have along my life taken pictures of houses which were important to me or my family. I am transforming the image of those houses on the computer and grow them roots, which I print afterwards using a polyester plate and a lithographic technique onto Plexiglas. This piece of plastic is the first layer of my work. On the background I imaging the layer of soil my roots need to grow, develop and anchor and I create a collagraph representing those layers. When everything is done, I frame the work leaving ¾ inch between the forefront and the background. This make my forefront reflects its shadow onto the background creating a 3D aspect to the work. The roots seem alive.
In a time of economic uncertainty, world conflicts and other difficult circumstances, I believe this work will resonate in many lives. The grief, the losses but also the anchorage to survive is somehow existential.

Knox Street, 2017, Unique Ed, Collagraph on paper and Lithograph on Plexiglas, 36"x42"
Knox Street was created at the end of 2017 and represent the houses in a street of Houston, named Knox Street. The house are very modern and appear to be very similar, almost identical, but when we look closely they are all different. What makes them so unique are their habitants who have diverse backgrounds, here showed in different colors, and make this city multicultural and so interesting!
